Nephrology

What is Nephrology

Nephrology deals with kidney diseases. It also involves advice and measures regarding preservation of kidney health from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy.

Symptoms of Kidney Disease

  • Changes in urinary pattern
    • When the kidneys don’t function well, urinary problems like increased frequency, nocturia may appear. You may also experience urine that’s frothy—which could be an early sign that protein is being lost in the urine due to damaged kidneys.
  • Fatigue
    • Renal impairment may produce anaemia. This in combination with retained toxins, can produce excessive tiredness.
  • Itching
    • The increased amount of urea and phosphorous in the blood may produce dry and itchy skin.
  • It was swelling on the face or in other parts of the body.
    • When your kidneys aren’t removing excess fluid and sodium from your body, swelling (also known as oedema) may occur on the face and other body parts.
  • Shortness of breath
    • Extra fluid can build up in your lungs when your kidneys aren’t removing enough fluid, which may cause breathlessness.
  • Decreased appetite
    • A buildup of waste products due to impaired kidney function may cause you to lose your appetite and make digestion impaired.
  • Puffiness around your eyes
    • Protein leaking into your urine as a result of kidney damage may cause persistent puffiness around the eyes, an early sign of kidney disease.
  • High blood pressure
    • Excess fluid and sodium build up as a result of kidney disease can cause you to have higher blood pressure. High blood pressure lead to a worsening of kidney disease over time.
